Sitecore launches version 6

The latest version of Sitecore is now available and reviews so far have been generally positive; for example, CMS Wire thinks that the new release “demonstrates both that the company cares about its customers and that it has a successful process of building client feedback into the product development cycle.”

But what does the development team at 3Sixty make of the new version of Sitecore? After all, they are pretty well-placed to comment having developed more than 20 websites using Sitecore 4 and 5 in the last four years.

Having taken a quick look under the bonnet of Sitecore 6 the consensus is that we’re pretty impressed. There are lots of improvements, but four stand out:

  1. There’s a new system that makes it easier for content editors to eliminate errors before going live. A validation bar highlights errors on the page before its published, making it easier for us to fix them before the page is put live.
  2. The ability to select multiple media files for upload simultaneously, rather than laboriously selecting each file individually, will make it a lot quicker to create media-heavy sites.
  3. A new search functions lets users scan for text within documents, making it easier to find and alter content.
  4. The Quick Action bar displays information on items in the content browser, without having to actually open the item first, so it’s easy to see which items are locked, have errors, or are being worked on.

For 3Sixty’s clients, the real difference is that our development process will accelerate, fewer bugs will sneak through (hopefully), and our ability to locate and resolve those issues that do emerge will be improved. The process of altering page content should also be made much easier for clients who have no training in development.

In short, the decision to upgrade to Sitecore 6.0 will give us the tools we need to better serve our clients.
